Why learn the ukulele?

Hello there!

If you’re reading this, I bet you’re interested on playing the ukulele, but if you’re not, then I hope this short post can help you consider trying out this small but, great instrument.

The ukulele is a four stringed instrument which originated from Hawaii during the 19th century. Originally created in one size it has evolved into 4 different sizes which are, soprano, concert, tenor and baritone, with soprano being the most common size. The bigger the ukulele, the deeper the sound it produces. It is generally preferred to start out with the soprano if you’re just starting out on the instrument. It’s cheaper, lighter and produces that familiar twangy sound we love.

Some people might consider ukulele as a toy rather than an instrument because of it’s size, but the truth is, this innocent looking instrument has made it into the mainstream media. Just check out Train’s Hey, Soul Sister and Taylor Swifts’s song, Mean.

To help you decide, here are the reasons why you should learn to play the ukulele:

  • With its four strings and shorter fret board, the ukulele is very easy to learn. In fact, you can start playing a tune in less than an hour!
  • Because of its size, you can bring it anywhere! It’s portable.
  • The ukulele is a happy instrument. Seriously, compared to its fellow musical string instruments, the ukulele produces a happy sound. Not to mention that people find them cute as well.
  • It’s affordable. You can get a decent one below $50! (Check out Makala Dolphin Ukulele)
